Agnes Yewande Savage was a trailblazer for women of colour in early 20th century Scotland. Born in Edinburgh to a Nigerian father and Scottish mother, she faced many barriers in her life and career. She was the first woman of West African heritage to receive a medical degree from the University of Edinburgh and went on to found a nurses’ training college in Ghana.
