189,846 Covid cases were recorded on Hogmanay, a new 24 hour record. The dramatic increase in case numbers during December and subsequent health protection measures led to the cancellation of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay events, including the Torchlight Procession, Street Party and Fireworks. Vaccination centres remained open on Hogmanay to support the #BoostedByTheBells campaign. With hospitality restricted to table service and night clubs closed, the streets were much quieter than normal as Edinburgh approached 2022.
