Photograph of view from Lauriston Castle over fields to Cramond Island

Description

One black and white landscape photograph with a beige border of Cramond Island as seen from Lauriston Castle. This photograph was taken from the gardens in front of Lauriston Castle. Through the bushes you can see the fields stretching down to the Firth of Forth and the faint outline of the hills of Fife behind.

Cramond Island is linked by a causeway to the shore and only passable at low tide.

This photograph was taken soon after William Robert Reid and his wife Margaret Barton moved into Lauriston in the summer of 1903. It is one of several in an album showing different views of the grounds. When the Reids moved into Lauriston the grounds were very overgrown as the previous owner, Thomas MacKnight Crawfurd, didn’t like his gardeners trimming the trees and bushes. This image may have been taken by a professional photographer, although they are not marked with any photographer’s name, or they may have been taken by Mrs Reid. She was a keen amateur photographer and was later a member of the Edinburgh Photographic Society
