Edinburgh Univesity School of Informatics lost 30,000 square feet of offices in the devastating Cowgate fire of 2002. At this point a previously proposed plan to build a new Informatics building in a vacant lot at Crichton Street owned by the University, and near its other facilities Potterrow, Teviot House and the David Hume Tower, was swiftly extended to house those displaced by the loss. Work broke ground on the new 'Informatics Forum' in October 2005 and it was completed in 2008.
