The bible belonged to William Mark, a missionary who worked in the deprived parts of Edinburgh towards the end of the nineteenth century. He was part of a concerted effort by church leaders to spread the Christian message in areas that were experiencing declining church attendance, and to alleviate suffering. In 1897 William Mark went to Paraguay to continue his missionary work for the South American Missionary Society. 125 H 80 W 25 D
