David T. Rose was born in Wigtownshire, grew up in Nairn, lived and studied in Glasgow where he discovered the Glasgow Boys. His working life as a civil engineer took him further afield including to Malta, Yorkshire, Wales and London. However, he regularly returned for family holidays visiting his sister in Edinburgh and other relatives in Fife.

It's believed the watercolours of Edinburgh and environs in this collection were painted on these trips. The exhibition features scenes of city life encompassing diverse areas from the Old Town to Craigmillar and from Joppa and Leith.

Still painting in his late eighties, David T. Rose wrote: "... an artist in fact, is a person endowed with a keener sense of beauty than normal, plus an insatiable urge towards pictorial expression".
He produced over 3,000 watercolours in his lifetime of varied subjects including markets, ships, workmen, cartoons, harbours and animals.

The mini-collection belonging to Central Library by this talented artist is a set of 70 delightful sketches giving a pictorial view of mid-20th century life in Edinburgh.
