This map was published as part of ‘A Civic Survey & Plan for the City & Royal Burgh of Edinburgh’ – this volume was prepared for the Town Council by Patrick Abercrombie and Derek Plumstead. The volume was published by Oliver and Boyd: Edinburgh Tweeddale Court / London 98 Great Russell Street in 1949. It was an advisory report by Abercrombie and Plumstead in their respective capacities as a Consultant and Town Planning Officer and was intended as a set of suggestions that could be incorporated as a whole or in parts.
The forward in the volume by the Lord Provost, suggests that people's life, happiness and usefulness is greatly affected by environment and therefore stresses the importance of town planning and other related factors on a city's citizens.
