Title
Girls' plastic knee-high boots, 1960s
Description
Girls' knee-high boots in pale yellow and black patent-effect plastic. Punched decoration runs down the sides of the boots. Low, stacked heel.
Location
Museum of Edinburgh
Accession number
MC.266.99
As new materials became available and the use of overseas labour to produce Britain’s shoes increased, shoes became less expensive. This enabled fashions to change more rapidly.
These girls’ boots would have been the height of fashion when they were bought in the 1960s. They make reference to the bold, bi-coloured designs of fashion designers such as Mary Quant. The punched decoration harks back to Victorian boot designs, Victoriana being a key stylistic influence in the 1960s and 1970s.
