Painted on 9th July 1849.
Castlehill is the section of the Royal Mile running from Castle Esplanade to the Lawnmarket in Edinburgh.
Behind the 'Laus Deo' house stood the ornate palace and oratory of Mary of Guise, built in the 16th century, and to the right, is Somerville's Land, owned by Bartholomew Somerville, merchant burgess in the 1630s.
