Title
St Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Broughton Place, Edinburgh
Description
A view across a quiet cobbled road towards St Mary's Cathedral. The structure has a steeply pitched roof on the body of the church building and the porch entrance. There are four ornamental pinnacles rising from the gable-end.
The Cathedral is separated from the pavement by a wall with high railings on top of it and there are two gated entrances into the enclosure. A tall tree stands within the church grounds. A woman wearing a hat and coat and carrying bags walks down the pavement opposite the Cathedral.

St Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Edinburgh, is situated between the north end of Leith Street and the south end of Broughton Street. The original building was designed by James Gillespie Graham and built in 1814. The building underwent significant changes and enlargements in the following decades. The most significant improvements were undertaken towards the end of the 19th century, in part necessitated by damage caused by the fire at the adjacent Theatre Royal in 1892. Originally the Chapel of St Mary's it acquired Cathedral status in 1878.
