'Food for Thought - A Life in Four Courses' is an oral history food heritage project which explored and recorded the cultural heritage and traditions of food that mark significant events or 'rites of passage' during an individual's lifetime. This project was delivered by Scottish charity, MECOPP (Minority Ethnic Carers of Older People Project) and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Through a series of interviews, 20 women and men from African, Caribbean, Chinese, Nepalese, South Asian and White Scottish communities, living here in Scotland, tell us of the role of food in both their own personal lives and in their communities.
Alongside the four sound montages and ten podcasts featured on Capital Collections, 'Food for Thought - A Life in Four Courses' produced four short films, a collection of recipe cards, an interactive food heritage map and a book. For more information visit

Through these personal accounts, we hear childhood memories, the food traditions of life events and festivals and we learn of the changes people have seen in the food traditions of their culture. Finally, we learn what they feel the future holds for these traditions in a more globalized and fast moving world.
