To mark the
2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design
, this exhibition brings together examples of Edinburgh's historic architecture dating from the sixteenth to early twentieth century.
Images highlight many notable buildings across Edinburgh's World Heritage site by world-renowned architects. The Old Town boasts Holyrood Palace and Abbey, Edinburgh Castle, John Knox House and Edinburgh University Old College as well as grand tenement buildings from the sixteenth century and the later working class tenements of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The New Town has outstanding neo-classical buildings such as Great King Street, Charlotte Square and the Assembly Rooms.
Acclaimed architects are represented: Robert Adam and his design for Edinburgh University's Old College and Register House, William Henry Playfair's Greek Doric design for the Royal Scottish Academy and Sir Robert Rowand Anderson's McEwan Hall and Catholic Apostolic Church in Broughton Street.
