The Scottish Independence Referendum took place on 18th September 2014. Most people who lived in Scotland were eligible to vote, but unlike other UK elections, 16 and 17 year olds were also able to cast their vote in the referendum.
Voters were asked to answer "Yes" or "No" to the question "Should Scotland be an independent country?" The "No" side won with 55.3% of the vote. The turnout was exceptionally high - 84.6% - demonstrating how much the electorate had engaged with the debate. The "Yes Scotland" campaign was led by the First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond and the "Better Together" campaign was led by the Right Honourable Alastair Darling, M.P.
The photographs in this exhibition document the signs that appeared in Edinburgh and further afield in the run-up to the vote as people started to pin their intentions to the mast. There is also coverage of voting day as people turned out in their thousands at their local polling stations.
