This exhibition honours
Armed Forces Day
, which takes place each year on the last Saturday of June.
The exhibition highlights a collection of items held by Edinburgh Museums and Galleries. Some of the objects within the exhibition were donated by James Walker, brother of John Walker, who was killed in action near Arras, France on the 15th April 1917. Sgt John Walker was aged 29 when he died.
Sgt John Walker was a member of the 7th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders (Walker transferred from the Scots Greys), and was awarded the D.C.M. for his work in the big advance in the Battle of Loos in 1915. In his civil life Sgt Walker was the manager for Messrs Arthur Bros., butchers in Comiston Road, Edinburgh. Sgt Walker was also one of four brothers serving in the army during this period.
