This exhibition highlights paintings of Historic Edinburgh, from the City Art Centre collections.
Edinburgh is one of the most architecturally vibrant and scenic cities in the world. Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline in many of these paintings, which helps as a reference point, to the changing landscape seen over time by these various artists.
Many of the paintings show areas of Edinburgh like the Royal Mile, and distinctive landmarks such as St Giles Cathedral founded in 1120.
Many of the buildings of the Royal Mile have remained unchanged over the centuries and as highlighted by artist John Kay, have hosted many historical figures and events.
Other artists like J.W Ewbank, capture early 19th century views of Edinburgh. On 15th August 1822, George 1V visited Edinburgh amid a great spectacle of pageantry and ceremony. Ewbank shows the beauty of Edinburgh and the historical importance of the Scottish Capital.
