James Skene was an amateur artist and friend of Sir Walter Scott who described him as an amiable and accomplished young man, and for a gentleman the best draughtsman I ever saw'. Together they toured the Borders of Scotland for scenes to illustrate the Waverley Novels.
This collection of watercolour paintings depicts views from Skene's travels throughout Scotland, from the highlands to the southern counties. The images show spectacular landscapes under ever-changing and dramatic skies.
