This exhibition brings together character portraits by two Edinburgh caricaturists.
The black and white etchings of John Kay date from the late 1700s and offer a contrast to the later watercolour paintings of Edward Holt. Kay cast his satirical eye across the city, but focused his attention on the notable personalities of Edinburgh's high society, the doctors and scientists, soldiers and dandies.
Holt produced his caricatures almost a century later and he concentrated on his immediate surroundings and the populace who spent their days living on and by the street. From street sellers and musicians, to preachers and beggars, Holt depicts the seedier side of Edinburgh's Old Town in the 19th Century.
