George Street is located in central Edinburgh and was intended by James Craig to be the principal street within his plan for the geometric New Town, being by design, the widest and grandest. It runs from St Andrew Square in the east to Charlotte Square in the west, parallel with Princes Street to the south and Queen Street to the north. Today, George Street retains an air of exclusivity with an array of bars, designer shops and boutique hotels.
This selection of images shows the passage of time as various modes of transportation has moved up and down the street. One picture depicts a horse and carriage pulling up outside the Assembly Rooms, while another shows a large group of penny farthing enthusiasts traversing the cobbled road. Today's view shows cars parked down the central length of the road and the monuments used as roundabouts.
