James Grant designed this church to serve the people of Tannadice, a village in Angus. They were in need of a new church, which was finally built in 1866 - but not to Grant's design. Instead that of John Carver, an architect based in Perthshire, was used. Carver embraced a number of architectural styles for his churches, and he had a clear preference for impressive towers. His design for Tannadice Parish Church has some similarities to Grant's, since both are compact and rectangular, though the distribution of windows and buttresses differ. While Grant included an octagonal spire immediately above the west door to make the church symmetrical, Carver added an octagonal bell tower to the south-east end of the church - both have pointed arches above their windows. However, the designs are too different for it to be anything but coincidence. Carver was 12 years younger than Grant, which might have been frustrating as Grant was failing to establish himself as an architect in his own right.
