Drum House was built by William Adam for Lord Somerville from 1726-34. The west wing incorporates the vaulted ground floor of the house built for the 7th Lord Somerville in 1584 by John Mylne. A planned matching east wing was never built. The house was surrounded by landscaped grounds set out by William Adam, most of which have not survived. From 1756 to 1866 the Edinburgh Mercat Cross was at Drum House, following its removal from the High Street. There is now a replica near the stables. The estate had several changes of ownership in the early 19th century, until 1862 when it was bought by John More Nisbett, whose family still own it.
