Nasmyth's monument, Greyfriars Churchyard
Description
Two men gaze at Nasmyth's monument examining the stone carvings on the tomb. The men wear long coats and top hats and a cane are abandoned nearby. The monument is now in a state of disrepair as a tree is growing from the stone lintel.

Greyfriars Kirkyard, or Graveyard, is the burial ground of Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. It houses the graves of many notable historical figures including the poet Allan Ramsay, the geologist James Hutton and the architect William Adam. In 1679 several hundred Covenanters were imprisoned in the Kirkyard awaiting trial.
John Nasmyth of Posso's was Chief surgeon to the King of France's Scots Bodyguard.
