John Cay was a Member of the Edinburgh Calotype Club, which was formed in the 1840s. Some of his photographs are included in the two volumes of the Edinburgh Calotype Club Album. One volume is held in the Central Library's collection. John Cay went on to become a Founding Member of the Photographic Society of Scotland in 1856.
