Lord Cockburn and family at Bonaly

Description

A group of twelve men, women and children stand outside Bonaly Tower, Edinburgh. The house has a tower with a large doorway in it and an external staircase. The women are wearing day dresses, many of them in checked material. One of the woman has a parasol. Two of the men are carrying hats and one is sitting in an unusually shaped chair.

Bonaly Tower is located immediately to the north of Bonaly, once a village outside Edinburgh, now a suburb in the north-west of the city. It was designed by William H. Playfair in 1836 for Lord Cockburn. D. O. Hill and Robert Adamson were regular guests of Lord Cockburn at Bonaly.
