This view is taken from the opposite side of the street, at the General Assembly Hall, looking north-west, and shows a portion of the old buildings in 1850.
Accompanying text reads,
'Castle Hill extends from the head of the West Bow to the Castle Gate; the name applying to the area on both sides of the street, and the Esplanade. In addition to the buildings fronting the street, the space at the back was occupied by closes containing the residences and family mansions of Lords Sempill and Rockville, the Earls of Cassilis, Leven, and Dumfries, the Marquis of Argyle, and the Duke of Gordon....'
