In the same sentiment as the front cover and the rest of the book, this frontispiece demonstrates Crane's intentions of achieving a unity in his illustrations between image, a coloured lithograph, and text by considering them as a whole. The drapery of the figure in this illustration curves around the text, and the yellow of the lettering is repeated in his hair and the pipes. This compositional approach can be found throughout.
