Biography
Painters and printmakers, twins (Charles) Maurice and Edward Julius Detmold were born in 1883 in Putney in London. It is thought their mother may have died in childbirth as they were brought up under the guardianship of their uncle, Dr E. B. Shuldham, in Hampstead.

From an early age, they both demonstrated a natural flair for drawing and an interest in drawing animals. At the age of thirteen they exhibited work at the Royal Academy. They continued to produce paintings and prints, getting work published and exhibited and often working collaboratively, even on single plate etchings. Their illustrated edition of Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book was published in 1903.

In 1908, Maurice Detmold committed suicide, leaving a note saying '...I have expressed through my physical means all that they are capable of expressing...'

Edward continued to produce prints and watercolours for many years after Maurice's death. And then in 1957 in Wales, disillusioned with life and the world, he too committed suicide.
