Biography
Takashima Shuhan was a military engineer and gunnery expert. Born in Nagasaki, he was the first in Japan to undertake study of Western arms and, having imported Dutch flintlocks, he mastered the casting of such pieces. He was a pioneer in establishing troops equipped with guns and many domains sent men to study with him.
In Japanese culture a person's family name comes first, so this artist's name is written Takashima Shuhan.
