About the artist
Name
Sato, Issai
Biography
Sato Issai was an influential Confucian scholar and teacher. Born in Edo to a family of Confucian advisers to the lord of Iwamura domain, he was close friends (and officially the pupil of) Hayashi Jussai. In 1800 he was invited to Nagasaki, where he met with visiting Chinese scholars. In 1805 he became head of the Shoheiko, the Shogunate school for the training of officials. He had a number of successful pupils and was a key adviser to the government.
In Japanese culture a person's family name comes first, so this artist's name is written Sato Issai.
