About the artist
Name
Asaka, Gonsai
Biography
Asaka Gonsai was a Confucian scholar and author. Born into a family of Shinto priests in Asaka county (present-day Fukushima Prefecture), Gonsai moved to Edo and studied with Sat? Issai (who also features in this album) and Hayashi Jussai (1768-1841). He founded a private Confucian academy in Edo and also served in a number of the shogunate's educational institutions.
In Japanese culture a person's family name comes first, so this artist's name is written Asaka Gonsai.
