Onuma, Chinzan
Biography
?numa Chinzan was a leading figure in the world of kanshi (Chinese-language poetry) and calligraphy. Born in Owari province, he studied kangaku (classical Chinese learning) with his maternal uncle, the scholar Washizu Ekisai. In Edo, he ran the Shitaya Ginsha poetry group and participated widely in cultural activities of the time.
In Japanese culture a person's family name comes first, so this artist's name is written Onuma Chinzan.
