"The explanatory notes contain minute directions for colouring. The frequent occurrence of the word, Sumi, Indian ink or black, refers to the practice of using that pigment as a neutral tint to modify other colours, after the manner of our early watercolour painters. The slight wash of colour seems to be employed merely as an aid to the memory, and does not aim at rendering the brilliant hues of Nature."
