The Royal High School building in Regent Road was designed by Thomas Hamilton and housed the school from 1829-1968. When the school relocated to new premises in Barnton the building was converted for government use. If the 1979 Independence Referendum had returned a Yes vote, the old Royal High School was to be the home of the devolved Scottish Assembly. When the Scottish Parliament was established in 1997 a new building was erected at Holyrood. The (Old) Royal High School building now belongs to the City of Edinburgh Council. There are plans to develop it as a luxury hotel.
