A view of Granton Pier in the north of Edinburgh. In the foreground is the sea. A number of ships and boats are moored next to the pier. Smoke is coming from the funnels of two steamboats and masts and rigging of sailing ships can be seen. There are several square buildings on the pier.

Granton Harbour, situated in the north of Edinburgh on the Firth of Forth, was constructed in the mid 19th century. In addition to acting as a fishing harbour it also provided an important link to Fife and the north of Scotland. From 1848 to 1890 a rail ferry was in operation carrying trains from Granton to Burntisland on the Fife coast.
