House 12 Claremont Park. Provost 1887-1893.

Chairman of the Directors of the London and Edinburgh Shipping Company. Mr. Aitken reached the age of 85 before his death in 1907. Born in the ancient Burgh of Culross where he got part of his education, before completing his education at the Royal High School, Edinburgh.

His first years of what was to be a properous commercial career were spent at a firm of stockbrokers at Grangemouth. After his apprenticeship he accepted a post in a Leith Shipping Company, from bookkeeper he rose in the course of 12 years to general manager of the company he worked for over 50 years. He was also appointed chairman of the Leith Docks Commisssion on many occasions. He also donated £40,000 to the Edinburgh Royal infirmary.
