Dr Mackenzie was a renowned doctor, in the field of public health. He was appointed Medical Officer for Leith in 1894 where he succeeded in dealing with a outbreak of Smallpox.
In 1901 he was appointed Scottish Local Government Boards first medical inspector. In 1902 he wrote a report on poor inner city children which resulted in the introduction of school meal service and medical inspections.
From 1904-1917 he was a member of the Board Of Health for Scotland until his retirement in 1928.
