Leith's first harbour was the mouth of the Water of Leith, improved by the construction of piers to protect the entrance. Leith Docks, first begun as enclosed docks running parallel to the shoreline in 1801, were filled in and replaced by the Edinburgh, Imperial, Victoria and Albert Docks in 1851-81. The smallest, the Victoria Dock, opened in 1851. The first swing bridge on this site, linking Victoria Dock and Albert Dock, was constructed from 1871-74 by Alexander Rendel and George Robertson. It was replaced in about 1896 by a bridge which is still in existence although it has not been used since the mid-1990's
