On this site stood the Preceptory of Saint Anthony, the only house of that order in Scotland. Founded in 1430,the canons living in the Preceptory cared for the sick, the poor and the aged in the village of Leith. They were highly regarded locally, and after the reformation the canons continued their work until the last of them died and the Preceptory was abandoned in the closing years of the sixteenth century. The income of the Preceptory was then transferred the Kirk of session of the Parish Church, who built the King James Hospital in the churchyard. This in turn was demolished about 1822, and the funds are now distributed as pensions by the Kirk session of South Leith parish church.
