Sir Malcolm Smith was Provost of Leith between 1908-1917, shortly before Leith was incorporated into The City Of Edinburgh in 1920.
He was elected as a member of Parliament for Orkney & Shetland in 1921, In the 1922 General Election he stood as a National Liberal but was defeated by the Liberal Party. He died in Leith and was buried at Warriston Cemetery. A memorial to Smith and his wife is in South Leith Parish Church.
