Leith Flour Mills known locally as Tod's Mills after the owners A & R Tod in Commercial Street, burned down in 1874, and is remembered as one of the most destructive fires in Edinburgh's history, the damage amounting to approximately £168,000. It is thought the fire started by a slight explosion or some portion of the machinery overheated to such a extent as to ignite the wood works. It didn't take long for the fire to spread and the house's across the road had to be hosed down to stop them catching fire.
