Inscribed 'The Valour of German Culture' 1914, this carved panel over a garage doorway in Pitt Street was the work of William Baxter, a builder and stonemason. He was a town councillor and latterly bailie of Leith. This carving was his response to the news of the German invasion of Belgium in the 1914-18 war.
