The motto is 'Pervia virtuti sidera terra mare' (Virtue masters astronomy, geography, navigation). The arms include aids to navigation: two globes, cross-staff, astrolabe and anchor.
Trinity House was built in 1816 for use as the Mariners' Hospital.
