Smith's Land was also known as the 'Irish Barracks'. This photograph was taken shortly before it was demolished as a result of the Edinburgh (Leith) Improvement Scheme of 1924, a plan for the regeneration of an area of Leith surrounding Constitution Street and to the north of Great Junction Street where many of the streets and houses were considered unfit for human habitation. Displaced residents were mostly re-housed outwith the area covered by the scheme.
