The scene is probably Constitution Road, which became the north half of Constitution Street in the 1790s. Constitution Road is shown on Alexander Wood's map of 1777.
Leith Races were held on East Sands, an area immediately to the north of the present Links which has since been built over. They were regarded as one of Scotland's most important horse race meetings, and continued in Leith from about 1660 to 1816, when the race meetings moved to Musselburgh to be run on turf. Between 1836 and 1859 the Subscription Races were run on East Sands but this was a smaller event.
