Balmerino House stood at the corner of Coatfield Lane in the Kirkgate. It was entered from the Kirkgate, via an archway behind the building as seen in this view. It was built in 1631 by John Stuart, Earl of Carrick, who sold it to Lord Balmerino in 1643, and it remained in the Balmerino family until 1746. It may have been the temporary residence of Charles II in 1650. It was later subdivided for poor tenants and in 1848 sold to the Catholic Church and converted to a school. It has since been demolished for new housing developments.
