The Astley Ainslie Hospital is situated immediately to the north of Blackford Hill in Edinburgh. It was built with a bequest from David Ainslie of Costerton, and named after his nephew. The hospital opened in 1923 for convalescents from the Royal Infirmary. The original site consisted of the grounds and buildings of four mansion houses: Canaan House, Canaan Park; Millbank and Southbank, with Morelands and St Roque's houses and grounds being acquired later. The hospital now provides post-acute care and rehabilitation medicine services for patients with conditions such as stroke, cardiac disease and brain injury.
