This was the oldest graving dock (dry dock) in Leith and possibly Scotland, built in 1771 (or possibly as early as 1720) by the shipbuilder John Sime. It continued to be used by other shipbuilders after the rest of the yard of Sime and Rankin was built on, but has been filled in since 1953.
