Fisher, Howard & Sons shared premises with other businesses at Easter Road. By 1898 another cork cutting company had replaced them there. At the end of the nineteenth century there were several cork cutting companies in Leith, a natural place for them to set up as cork was imported by sea. Cork was used for bottle stoppers, to a greater extent than it is now, and also in the production of linoleum.
