The Priory Church of St Mary of Mount Carmel was originally part of a Carmelite Friary, which was founded in 1330. The church was built in the mid-15th century, along with other monastic buildings which were demolished in the 19th century. After the Scottish reformation in 1560 the land and buildings were returned to the Dundas family and the church was used as the parish church for Queensferry until 1635. It fell into disrepair during the 17th century, but was restored by the architect John Kinross and reconsecrated as an Episcopal church in 1890. Further work was carried out in the 1960s by Ian Lindsay, and the church was most recently refurbished in 2000.
South Queensferry is situated on the Firth of Forth, roughly 9 miles west of the centre of Edinburgh. The Forth Road Bridge and Rail Bridge cross to Fife from South Queensferry.
