The Old Stamp House Close
Description
Donald Campbell's poem is inspired by the sketches of Walter Geikie:

The Old Stamp House Close

In the old Stamp House Close
everyone is in a pother
for seven lovely ladies
and their ever-lovely mother
are expected at the Palace
for tonight's grand affair
And they'll want to make an entrance
with that Eglington Air.

There's Elizabeth and Helen,
Susan, pert and petite
with Margaret and Christian
and Grace, who's oh so sweet.
And then there's flighty Fanny
who makes everyone despair
when she saunters through the closes
with that Eglington Air.

The Countess, Lady Susanna,
is so beautiful and tall.
In her usual charming manner
she conducts them to the ball.
As a swan leads out her cygnets, she
Moves with grace and dignity
Everyone must have a caddy
Everyone must have a chair
As they journey down the High Street
with that Eglington Air.
