Title
The Old Assembly Rooms, Bell's Wynd
Description
Donald Campbell's poem is inspired by a sketch by Walter Geikie:
The Old Assembly Rooms, Bell's Wynd
Young ladies may ogle, young gentlemen sigh
yet none may dare to take a chance
to share a smile or fleeting glance.
Miss Nicky Murray looks askance
on anyone who would defy
the dictates of her dominance.
Let young ladies ogle, young gentlemen sigh.
Miss Murray needs to specify
who partners who in every dance.
She will permit no dalliance.
No sign of such escapes her eye.
Yet this will hardly satisfy
young folk yearning for romance.
There's some will always take the chance
and as this languid evening staggers by
young ladies will ogle, young gentlemen sigh
